The Status Civilization by Robert Sheckley (1960)

Some stories make me feel like I know what will occur next. And I was wrong every time while reading this one which made me smile. An unabashedly Scifi narrative about a planet of criminals, this book continually asks questions about the nature of society and government in our daily lives. The author takes every opportunity to present the dichotomy between common Earth beliefs and those on Omega. How much of our own beliefs are affected by the people we meet and te laws that govern our existence? Will Barrent has to struggle with the questions when his memory is wiped and he is left on the criminal run planet of Omega. Told of his past crimes he has to struggle against what feels natural and the customs on Omega which frequently lead him in another direction. I urge you to pick up and read The Status Civilization.
